Maybe it's the emulation? Super Smash Bros. U has severe input lag on the demos that you can play, but there's no input lag when I've played the same games on NES Remix. I think it may be poor emulation with Super Smash Bros U, while NES Remix it's hard coded into the game because that's the only way it could be done to allow you to finish them as trials.
Maybe it's the same with virtual console games?
