Rpgs do tend to crank up the grinding over time and it is a long game by all accounts so, at over 20 hours in, there's probably a lot lot more to come. Regardless, it's sold me on picking up the sequel some day.

In my experience the game only cranks up the grinding midway (but the story also picks up then), and then it rapidly declines (unless you're trying to 100% it.) More people have problems with being overleveled in XBC than being underleveled. But that is mostly because the side-quests give a lot of experience if you do them, which you said you have no interest in.
