Maybe they could come up with a fold out design that swivels into an optional vertical position, or even a top screen that detach and be repositioned for backwards compatibility mode. What I would probably do if they really need room on the bottom half of the unit for a huge battery + room for heat dissipation from a fairly high end chip, I'd move the battery up to the top panel behind the LCD. Interesting note but the Wii U tablet screen when held vertically is the *exact* same width of a regular (original) 3DS top screen. So if they can have a screen that large for the next handheld, if positioned vertically, it would be able to match the O.G. 3DS, which to me is good enough for playing old games for those who want to in a pinch. |
I don't think they would put so much effort in including the second screen merely for BC. It's going to be used in NX games too, just as much. I don't like the size of the OG 3DS. I'm sure it'll be functionally adequate, but again, I like the bigger screen of the XL. Like I hope, and honestly think, they will launch the NXDS with both sizes.
There was a fake released around E3 with a slide up design called the XDS, so maybe they could do something like that, but that is still two separate screens. I honestly think, if given the choice, people would still pick a pricier clamshell design over a cheaper single screen one like the example you posted. It just allows for a bigger screen while still being portable and small of a package. Especially considering how thin phones are now, they could make something super sleek.
