| thismeintiel said: Yep. That's why music is no longer put on CDs. Or movies on DVDs/Blu-rays. This digital only is the future is just BS. Physical and digital will live together for decades. The only way for digital to completely take over is if the internet EVERYWHERE got so fast 50GB-100GB games only took a couple minutes to download. Or we could transport physical bonuses in collector editions through the net. Not going to happen anytime soon. |
The difference in that reguard is that unlike music, movies, and books, games are tied to platforms. You can play and one CD on like 2,000 different CD players. Same with movies, and books. It's literally impossible for those to become 100% digital, because anyone in their basement can burn a CD, burn a DVD, print a copy of a book, and it'll play on any DVD player or any bluray player or be printed on any paper.
With games, that won't happen, because you can only play your copy of the game on the platform it's intended for. You can only play XBO games on XBO. You can only play PS4 games on PS4. You can only play Wii U games on Wii U. In the hypothetical world where the NX, PS5, and XB2 don't have disc drives, where do you think you're getting those physical games and where do you think you're playing them? Answer - no where, because no one will make them because there will be nothing to play them.
If Sony stopped making DVD players, would DVDs stop being a thing? No. Why? Because the the first DVD player in the world will still be able to play the last DVD ever made, and anyone can make that DVD. If Sony releases a PS5 without a disk drive, would disks not be made for the PS5? Fucking obviously, because unlike with books, movies, and music, there is no other choice. You will either buy the game digitally, or you won't buy the game at all.
In order for physical media to die 100% with movies, you'd have to stop thousands of companies from making new DVD, VHS, and bluray players, and then you'd have to destroy every existing DVD, VHS, and blueray player in the world. In order for physical media to die 100% with games, you merely have to stop three companies from releasing their next gaming platforms with a disk drive.
That's it. Let's not act like the example's are even remotely comparable.
