The current console generation is like a Presidential election with a three cornered race: if any two candidates share far too similar visions, the third candidate's going to win without a sweat.
It's like in the Taiwan 2000 elections. The ruling party had a split and fielded two candidates. As a result, the opposition was able to win, with a measly 38% of the votes! Of course, the Wii's doing much better at this point, having 45%, but the idea is the same.
