GC sold just 2.3 million less than Xbox. Was the Xbox a big time flop?

In comparison to their direct competition, market leading  Play Station consoles, both Nintendo consoles flopped.

PSX sold 110 million consoles worldwide. N64 only 33 million. Difference around 80 million.

PS2  has sold over 120 million consoles worldwide. GameCube only 21 million. Difference around 100 million.

How come PS 1 and PS 2 was in direct competition with N64 and GC when the consoles of the PS were much weaker and now when it´s the other way around the Wii is not in direct competition with PS 3?

Many PS3 fans (not all) are cherry picking their console fights.
