The buttons were just... clunky. Like, really clunky, all of them. Maybe that's just the SNES controller I played on more recently, but that's how it felt to me. Either way, it was surely far better than the NES and N64 ones, so that's something.
But you know, the Gamecube controller was far better than what came before it. It was the first one to have dual analogs (which worked well unlike that N64 crap), ergonomy, proper triggers and what not. That's why people love it, really. It's the same reason Ocarina of Time is still held up as the best game ever and stuff like that.
The Wii U Pro Controller is VERY easily the best traditional controller Nintendo has ever made. If they do a redesign of it with analog triggers, gyro/motion sensors, and maybe speakers/mic for the NX, I'll be happy.

The GameCube controller was the epitome of clunky controllers. Nintendo's worst controller. It was bad, really bad.
1. It made tons of plasticky noise whenever someone used it.
2. The button configuration was totally fucked up.
3. The d-pad, c-stick, and z-trigger were completely worthless.
4. The analog sticks were garbage toy quality.
the entire controller was less like a true videogame controller, and more like a cheaply made children's toy.

You know the U Pro controller, Wii Nunchuck, & Classic controllers, all use the same GC/Wavebird joystick internals. I've fixed old GC controllers by transplating useless nunchucks into them. YOu can even put the all the joystick nunchuck grips on the GC controllers. To make it easier to use the C stick.
