You conveniently ignore the caveat to make a useless retort.

If you were only physically capable of doing 4 sit ups a year ago and you can now do 5 that is impressive, your physical capacity for doing sit ups has increased 25%. Consider a stroke victim for instance, making improvements in physical capacity of what would normally be considered as slight is impressive. Sure if you are capable of doing 100 sit ups but you only did 4 last year and did 5 this year that's pathetic on both counts. What's impressive is relative to ones own capacity, if you exceed what you were previously capable of then that is generally an impressive achievement. If you want some absolute comparison then nothing is impressive unless it beats CoD / GTA opening weeks.

There you have it. With that stroke victim example you are now getting closer to the actual definition of "impressed" - making a strong impression, all things considered. In your next example you say "significantly improve" which is also importat point. CoD/GTA comparison is pointless, simply significantly exceeding expectations can make a strong impression. This is all common sense so I don't know why you decided to lecture others with your own absolute definition. I was expecting MGSV to do better and split between PS4 and X1 tells us it failed to attract xbox gamers so I can't really call myself impressed. Of course it's UK only so far.

But hey, Xbox One is tracking ahead of 360 so far, I'd expect you to describe Xbox One sales as "impressive" from now on :)

How can I be accused of making an arbitrary absolute definition when my whole original point was that impressive is a relative term? Again, people failing to understand and only wanting to look at things from their own pre-conceived notions.

37% isn't a significant improvement on the previous best result with MGS2? I think it is. Hence impressive. MGS5 has impressive sales in the UK relative to how past MGS titles have sold in the UK. I don't see how anyone can actually argue against that statement, and most people are using the word within that context.

You were expecting closer to a 50/50 split between Xb one and PS4? That's just not realistic. You were pre-destined to not have a particularly positive view on MGS sales with that sort of expectation going in. You should also examine your expectations for MGS5 overall if you expected better than the 169K it sold. Like I said, my initial reaction was fairly muted with the MGS5 total until I was reminded that it's the best launch ever for MGS in the UK by a significant %. MGS gets the sort of fan (and media?) hype that comes with franchises like GTA and Mario, so it possibly creates expectations for levels of sales like those of GTA and Mario. But the fact is MGS has always been a series where the buzz generally exceeds the sales. Huge buzz, good sales. Makes people expect more than they should from opening week sales. Leads to people being underwhelmed when sales numbers are actually reported.
