Personally, I personally prefer user reviews. However you have to strip out the "fanboy" aspect.
However, people who buy the game generally know what they're getting themselves into. While journalistic reviews often end up with people who don't like a genre reviewing it against incredibly mainstream accessible gaming.
This is pretty much why I don't like stuff like Meta. It gives the fanboys ammunition to decide what is and isn't a good game. However, really, the opinions that count, are those of people who enjoy particular genres.
