Yes, the launches are skewed, which is why I was pointing out what was wrong with Rol's post. Are you sure that the PS3 was charting up with the Gamecube? In Japan, or worldwide?

It is perfectly fine to use that graph to say the Wii hit the mark 30 weeks before the PS2.
It is not ok to use the graph to imply that the PS3 will sell as well as the PS2.
The difference is that one is used to predict the future where one is used to state a fact. I think this might be a tough concept for some folks tbh. But I'll try to explain anyways.
When you're using this aligned graph to make predictions of the future for the PS3 VS PS2 you MUST account for the fact that they are different entities and will recieve different boosts at different times because they are offset. With that in mind you must take into account the PS2 having its biggest sales in the middle of its life and thus the beginning isn't a good representation of PS2 sales to compare against given the general perception of PS2 sales. The conclusion people try to take from this comparison is that the PS3 will sell well like the PS2. Or to put it extremely simply in this use of the graph you're trying to make the case that they are similar.
When you're using this aligned graph to show that the Wii reached a milestone faster than the PS2 you are trying to show how they are different and more to the point you are pointing to absolute points of data that are unchanging. The initial launches of each console will never change. The date that the 25,000,000th console was sold for each system is something that will never change. You can factually say it achieved the goal faster. But you can rightfully say that this comparison is not necessarily indicative of the future, which is what the PS3 comparison is trying to do.
I'm sure someone will deny that this is the purpose of the PS3 vs PS2 comparison but lets be real. The whole point is that the PS2 is recognized as a console that sold tremendously well and any equivalent sales comparison between the PS2 and any console is used to take advantage of that, including this Wii comparison.
