This is basically what I think Nintendo should do with NX, an affordable $150-200 console that is slightly more powerful than Wii U with an easily accessible, cheap to produce controller.

I've been saying that Nintendo will most likely be going head to head with Apple/Amazon rather than Sony/Microsoft. They need to win over this market that's a middle ground between mobile & consoles before it's taken over by others.

Anyone that invests in that market will fail. There are already a lot of players doing just that and different variations of said middle ground. But the same problems still plague them all. People serious about HDTV console gaming, probably already have mobile phones. They aren't buying a console to okay last gen looking or mobile games on their TVs. they want a proper gaming console. MS focused on that last gen and crippled Sony's market hold on the console industry. Song went back to focusing on that this gen and are leading.

Sometimes, the wheel doesn't need to be reinvented. If I were apple, u would made a Mac mini console. with a console OS that allows it run standard Mac OS apps, iOS apps and a HDTV centric UI. price its at $5-$600 as a premium product. even with $1000 options and gurabtee BC for the lifetime of the platform. And they will ultimately give PlayStation a run for its money down the road.

I think you could be right, though I wouldn't be surprised if Apple has a fair amount of success with this, though gaming is unlikely to be the focus.

"Middle ground" in the game industry is more like choosing to walk in the middle of a busy high way -- you're going to get run over. You either walk on one side of the highway (core, HDTV experiences) or the other side (casual tablet/phone gaming) but there's not much of a middle.
