Nintendo knows that the gaming industry marketshare per region is really worth noting, Japan is considerably smaller market now compared in the past, hence going all digital because Japan has it trending doesn't mean the whole world would really follow soon. Keeping retail disc or if they want like the 3Ds as long as the capacity and read/writes are great for their upcoming console and doesn't look like an obsolete technology from early 2000s, then people would embrace it.
I'm okay with 3Ds cart type of games, maybe upgraded version of it and can store large GBs of data for bigger games.
