Wikipeida says it's "hack-and-slash, adventure, and strategy" which pretty much sums it up.

Basically, there is no leveling system, aside from your Hunter Rank. Your Hunter rank goes up after you compete a set of quests, which consist of gathering quests (finding a certain amount of an item), Slaying quests (killing a certain number of weak monsters) and Hunting quests (Killing a certain monster, usually, very strong, thus where the strategy comes in). Defeating the big monsters is a huge undertaking. You must plan for it immensely. If it's a hot environment, bring cold drinks so that your health doesn't deplete, and vice versa. Bring Sonic bombs if it's an underground creature, so that the sound can make it come to the surface so that you can attack it. Bringing traps, so that you can trap it to capture it, or take a few swipes without it killing you. Then you choose what weapon to use, longswords, greatswords, guns, bowguns, dual swords, hunting horns, gun lances, and a few I can't remember. There's an immense layer of strategy that goes into even the simplest missions, since you never know which mosnters that you will encounter.

It's a VERY niche game. But if you like it, it's awesome.

That's the shortest way that I can sum-up Monster Hunter, but I've cut a lot of corners, and over-simplified everything, which MH doesn't do.

 

This description sounds very similar to a WRPG. You 1st don't revolve around the story the same way the typical jrpg would , but like a typical WRPG. Then you are assigned quests which sound similar to the format most WRPGS take, you go out and do quests until you get stronger. Is it linear dmeister? WHich means do you have to follow the main story, or do you have mini quests. If it's not then , again Wrpg. I can't say for sure if it is, but if it is any way similar to how you discribed it , they should categorize is as a wrpg. I got a question. Could a japanese developer make a WRPG, and a Western developer make a Jrpg? I don't think the genres are suppose to tell where the game came from, but rather what type of gameplay you would see in it, based off the common in the region. I might have to pick up the psp or ps2 versions. What game do you recommend me getting first.

WRONG. WRPG means WESTERN Role-playing game. MH is clearly a JAPANESE game. In this case, we categorize it as an RPG...but a Japanese one which makes it a JRPG.

It doesn't have to play like FF to be an RPG...or a JRPG >_>

That was what the last part was for. If this is the case then there shouldn't be the genres Wrpg, and Jrpg. What if a japanese developer wanted to make a Wrpg. They can't do that because they are japanese?  A genre should be made on content rather than region. So if these genres aren't content then don't use them. I believe though, that the genres weren't made of region , but rather the usual content in that you see in that region.

@ Dmeister There is no story at all? You don't have a basis on the character you control in the game? Seems like a strange game. I'm definately getting it after I beat some of the dozens of games I have unstarted.

@ routsounmanman I said most wrpg not all. I have to get balder's gate also still. 

So many games to beat, and so many games to get. AH I need a schedule. Hopefully I could beat them over the summer.
