I would argue in the Wasteland men are the source of power, and the society they live in demands brutality to maintain rule and order.  The idea being when we backslide from civilization we go back to "might makes right", and that means most likely men would overwhelm women by force.  You could argue it is lord of the flies mentality of anarchy taking away our mask of civility.  Just look at how harsh and barren life is that the female society uses its own women as bait to lure travelers and likely kill and pillage their goods.  Or could argue that power corrupts as Immorten Joe deprives all his people of precious resource of water while living well for himself with a harem being the grandest excess he covets, sacrificing countless lives to retrieve it.

To me it reflects the Dark Ages on top of modern technology. Brutal, cruel, unforgiving, and one where kindness and unselfishness are rare and often punished.  They wanted to run away, but ultimately they had to turn back and murder a bunch of people to conquer the Citadel as resources are too scarce for both to co-exist.

Plus, if you read the prequel comics, specifically the one for Immortan Joe, you see that he is desperate to look for an heir and he seeks the healthiest women trying to prevent malformations and mutations in his offspring.
