Only the upgrade is free (for now), you just get to choose whether you want to buy a good OS you can upgrade to a crappy OS for free, or buy a crappy OS outright. Than again, Windows 8/10 have bigger problems than that. There's making a bad OS, like with Vista, and then there's taking things in a completely wrong direction, like the path Microsoft has been on for a while, with only minor course correcting.
