That would be a very good time to announce it indeed. Good exposure for Nintendo, won't make Nintendo fans angry because of it taking place in a Direct or anything, and really is just a great idea overall.

In other words, it's not happening.

It would be a good time.. Indeed.. :)
But why should us Nintendo fans be angry if Nintendo did theire own thing.. (the may call it direct or some other).. ?
I would not.. Nintendo becomming bigger and reaching out to a "new" +500.000.000 market.. is only nice to watch :)
(same with the themeparks and QOL.. moveis and other..)

I would be annoyed if I was watching a Nintendo Direct and they just started talking about mobile games for 5-10 minutes... especially after the atrociously bad Digital Event they had at E3. I'm sick and tired of small budget spin-offs already.

Can't understand why you would that.. ?  I would mean that a "Nintendo fan" would like the extra 5-10 min of direct.. where they said and showed some of the (we should suspect) very big part of future Nintendo.

A Nintendo fan is happy about todays nintendo offering. A "once upon a time when i still played my snes but not since nintendo fan" will probably be pleased, but fans of today probably are not. How many fans want thing that they enjoy to change? Imagine your favorite band not sing your style anymore. Would you still be happy about it?

"Hardware design isn’t about making the most powerful thing you can.
Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."
