The mistake Nintendo made with third parties and Wii U was releasing a system very underpowered, it had nothing to do with the format.
Developers don't care about that, the PC gets plenty of developer support because it can run the games without much fuss, even though no one buys physical/disc based PC games.
Digital only really actually probably benefits developers ... now they don't have to give away $10-$15 of their profit per copy to the retailer/shipper/physical manufacturing costs.
