Nintendo consoles are very sturdy in general. No issue with the Wii U of course, my N64 works perfectly, DS's are a bit more fragile due to the hinge, 3DS is superb, my launch day Wii has been through an awful lot including a couple of big falls and still works perfectly (though I did need to clean the disc slot once for Brawl to continue to work).
Generally I look after my consoles (with the exception of the Wii!) and so they survive for a long time whatever brand they are. However I do believe that Nintendo's are just a little cut above the rest in this department. It makes me less uneasy about buying a launch day Nintendo console than I would be about buying a launch day Playstation or Xbox for sure.
