That's my point, you have to say "russian" mafia so others get which one you mean. Plain ol' mafia only means "italian mafia". 

I agree when anyone says Mafia and it's associated with USA people automatically think Italian mafia. That doesnt disregard there are other mafia's out there but people already associate it with italian descent.

This is mainly because of the gangster movies and tv shows over the last 20 years that have mainly focussed on italian heritage mafia.
