It's simple really. Marvel Studios movies appeal to the masses because they are lighthearted entertainment. They are the 80's adventure movies of our times. DC's darker tone doesn't really appeal as much to the masses, so they don't make as much money... yet.
I don't think they were off to a stellar start with MoS, which was pretty average and felt more like a low tier Marvel movie so we have to see if Batman can save the DCU and convince people they are worth watching. Marvel on the otherhand started with Iron-Man which is still considered one of their biggest and best films by many, so they had a strong foothold and had further success with the Avengers which has convinced people to keep watching them.
