Felt a lot more like the old movies, wheres Battle of Gods seemed to take itself less seriously, and focused more on the comedy side, which felt more contemporary with today. So did the new animation style and that they used an insert theme (from Flow). It was also a bit less cliche with the hero actually losing in the end for once.
If I was still a kid, I bet I would have liked Resurrection of F a lot more than Battle of Gods though.

the hero losing was my least favorite part of Battle of the Gods.  Hopefully Goku gets more powerful than everyone soon.  At least more powerful than Beerus
