I'd say it's too soon to tell, but from publishers aren't pushing for gameplay innovations either. Splatoon plays like nothing else. That's what grabbed me. It felt the same way to me from when I played Smash 64 for the first time... It didn't play like very other fighter.
I believe Nintendo held the content to teach players how to understand the game completely. Hell, I'm still learning. I had no idea clothing brands meant something to your abilities and the percentage abilities carry. I also didn't think I would ever be switching gear often, or that I would be trying different weapons for different maps.
Overall, let's just be glad this game exists, and that it has become so damn successful on a small install base.
