For someone trying to get into reading books, I think Dan Brown novels (Angels and Demons, Da Vinci Code, Lost Symbol) are a good starting point. The chapters are short, the plot moves along quickly and you learn fun facts as you go along. They do tend to stick to the same formula though so if you read them back to back, it gets repetitive.
