People really need to let go of this notion that "Yeah, Nintendo can totally keep up with the power race" when it comes to consoles. Not these days, they can't. Not unless you want a Nintendo system that costs $400-$500. I know I don't want to pay that, which is one of several reasons I don't have a PS4 yet also.

It isn't just the consumer paying for the device, but that would be Nintendo selling their console at a loss. Nintendo has deep reserves but not enough to go all in on a device that out paces the PS4 or anything the deep pockets of Sony or Microsoft can put out on a regular basis. If the NX is released in 2016 or 2017 and is on par with the potential graphical output of the PS4 that would be a big move considering Nintendo's philopshy for console design is usually all about being smart and economical, with the few times they strayed from that being N64 (which still made them money) and technically the Wii U (probably their first really bad loss in years although it is slowly turning things around).
