Only parts of the wii u spec is superior to 360 and PS3, the cpu performance of the 360 and PS3 is considerably stronger.

Nintendo don't like spending a lot on hardware but I think they realise by now the wii u was unacceptable as a console not even able to outperform consoles overall that data back to 2005/6. I don't know what Nintendo's next console is but assuming its not some low power android type console but a proper console capable of competing with xbox one and ps4 then I think they will choose hardware that is both low cost and has highish performance. Hence the newer AMD architecture which will be released in 2016.

Of course we could all be completely wrong but Nintendo must surely realise that to stay in the game they have to be more competitive on hardware design.

I think they're handcuffed. They probably don't want to spend on hardware but they know by now that they need third party support. Sports games get trashed on forums like this but, Madden is a pretty big deal. When you have a game console out that doesn't even have sports titles? That's not going to end well. Plus, they need COD... they need games like that which sell in high volume to average consumers.

The only way thier next console will get third party support is if their hardware/controller has parity with the industry.

Except that power isn't the only reason they didn't get more COD.  Wii U got black ops 2 and ghosts, meanwhile, they didn't get AW whereas ps3 and xb360 did get the game.  AW not coming to Wii U has nothing to do with power.  AW last gen versions could have been ported to Wii U if power was the reason.  Same with a lot of games.

If a nintendo console really want third party support, they need to start convincing gamers that nintendo consoles is also enjoyable for third party titles.  This is the hardest part for nintendo.
