basically this.
VR => boom your inside the game, playing the game in action packed game world. (you dont see anything from your room, just the gameworld)
AR => your sitting on your couch looking down at your coffee table, playing a virtual game of chess/checkers/card game, with your son (who also has a pair of AR glasses). After you play this game, you both go staire into the wall, to look at a virtual tv screen there, and watch some tv.
