That was not only MS's first console, it was launched two years after the first console of that gen (the DC) was launched.  The Wii U was the 1st console of this gen to launch, and Nintendo has a legacy live up to and pretty loyal fanbase to appease.  Completely different situations.

The NX, if released in Holiday 2016, will be going head to head with a $299 PS4 (the same price they are probably going to try to launch the NX at), in what could be its peak year.  And, like I said, if they are not going to outperform the PS4 in an attempt to be affordable, they will be ignored by the core market.  The market that is still kicking.  And if they are trying to have some kinda gimmick with the NX to appeal to casuals, they are obviously still on the wrong path, as the casuals are mostly gone.

If this is the scenerio, the NX will suffer the same fate as the Wii U.  Selling only to the hardcore Nintendo fans.  How many that are still around after being abandoned halfway through this gen.

I dont get it, so what if that was MS first console? How long Nintendo and Sony first consoles were on market before successor!? So what if it is launch 2 years after DC arived on market, again Xbox was 4 years on market. And like I wrote, Nintendo consoles usualy have life span around 5 years, so 1 year less isn't big deal. Also this: @Soundwave post:  The reality is of the four major console manufacturers, 3 of them (Nintendo, Sega, and Microsoft) have had their best selling game system's ever after previous product cycles of less than 5 years. The DS (released 3 1/2 years after GBA), Genesis (released 3 years after Sega Master System), and XBox 360 (released 4 years after the first XBox) all did monstrous business.

We can't know is PS4 in holiday 2016. will have $299 because PS4 still is selling very well with this $399 price. Nintendo will aim affordable price with NX probably around $249 not $299, same like they done with Wii.

We still dont know what exactly gimmick or new concept is, so that dont apliey they will target only casuals, if they really release some sort of hybrid device definitely will not targeting only casuals.

Nintendo made too many mistakes with Wii U, they failed almost in every way with Wii U (except great games), and you think that they will release successor with same mistakes that will have sales same like Wii U!? Wii U is their worst selling console ever, they will certainly sit down and think how to prepare successor that will be much more successful and they will certainly correct most of the mistakes they made with Wii U. Also their best selling console come after they worst selling console in that time.

The more important part is that the Xbox launched late in the gen, not first.  No one was going to find them  at fault for that. You want to see what happens when someone is first to launch, then quickly abandons the current gen, look no further than the DC.  Sega was in a very similar situation, too. Poor performing predecessor, underpowered HW (compared to the rest), and poor 3rd party support.

And if the rumblings are correct, we already know Nintendo is making the same mistakes.  Underperforming console in order to have a lower launch price? Check. Gimmick to draw in casuals? If it's a hybrid, check.  And if it's underpowered compared with even current gen, poor 3rd party support? Check.  Especially when the PS5 comes out 2 years later.

You see, Nintendo, and its fans, foolishly think that because Nintendo was able to strike gold with this approach with the Wii almost 10 years ago, and in a time when there was very little competition for the casual market from phones/tablets, they can do the same in a time with that ccompetition.  The Wii U already prooved they can't, but damned if they aren't going to try it again.

4 years is 4 years, doesn't matter if console arrived on beginning or on the end of gen.

You comparing Sega Dreamcast with Wii U!? Sega discontinued the Dreamcast only 2 years after realising! Wii U is in third year and this year we are getting some very good Nintendo games, also next year too, and Nintendo will probably announce few new games. How is that similar with Dreamcast when Wii U will be on market at least 4 years before new hardver arive, and you can bet that Wii U will not be discontinued at least for 2-3 years.

One of the main reasons why Wii U performing so bad are: bad timing, bad revealing, bad name, terrible marketing, not so affordable price, bad launch titles, software drought in 1st year, poor utilization of gamepad...not underperforming hardware (Wii is evidence for that), almost all things Wii had in comparing with Wii U. Nintendo is very aware of mistakes that they maked with Wii U and they already announced that they working to not repeat them on NX. Do you realise just if Wii U has different name and good marketing Wii U would easily perform at least on GC level.

You see, Nintendo haters foolishly think that because Nintendo done terrible job with Wii U they will done again with next hardware too, even Wii U is their worst selling console ever and they will certanly do whatever it needs to have next hardware much more successful.

Also, nobody think NX will be Wii kind of success, but almost anyone will tell you that they expecting much successful product than Wii U.

Things for now that will NX will probably have in comparison with Wii U:

-Better name, good marketing, affordable price, better new concept of playing (gimmick) if that hybrid thing is real, simple architecture of hardware, good launch titles, no software drouth...but yes, NX will perform same like Wii U!? Ok then. :)
