The more important part is that the Xbox launched late in the gen, not first. No one was going to find them at fault for that. You want to see what happens when someone is first to launch, then quickly abandons the current gen, look no further than the DC. Sega was in a very similar situation, too. Poor performing predecessor, underpowered HW (compared to the rest), and poor 3rd party support. And if the rumblings are correct, we already know Nintendo is making the same mistakes. Underperforming console in order to have a lower launch price? Check. Gimmick to draw in casuals? If it's a hybrid, check. And if it's underpowered compared with even current gen, poor 3rd party support? Check. Especially when the PS5 comes out 2 years later. You see, Nintendo, and its fans, foolishly think that because Nintendo was able to strike gold with this approach with the Wii almost 10 years ago, and in a time when there was very little competition for the casual market from phones/tablets, they can do the same in a time with that ccompetition. The Wii U already prooved they can't, but damned if they aren't going to try it again.

4 years is 4 years, doesn't matter if console arrived on beginning or on the end of gen.
You comparing Sega Dreamcast with Wii U!? Sega discontinued the Dreamcast only 2 years after realising! Wii U is in third year and this year we are getting some very good Nintendo games, also next year too, and Nintendo will probably announce few new games. How is that similar with Dreamcast when Wii U will be on market at least 4 years before new hardver arive, and you can bet that Wii U will not be discontinued at least for 2-3 years.
One of the main reasons why Wii U performing so bad are: bad timing, bad revealing, bad name, terrible marketing, not so affordable price, bad launch titles, software drought in 1st year, poor utilization of gamepad...not underperforming hardware (Wii is evidence for that), almost all things Wii had in comparing with Wii U. Nintendo is very aware of mistakes that they maked with Wii U and they already announced that they working to not repeat them on NX. Do you realise just if Wii U has different name and good marketing Wii U would easily perform at least on GC level.
You see, Nintendo haters foolishly think that because Nintendo done terrible job with Wii U they will done again with next hardware too, even Wii U is their worst selling console ever and they will certanly do whatever it needs to have next hardware much more successful.
Also, nobody think NX will be Wii kind of success, but almost anyone will tell you that they expecting much successful product than Wii U.
Things for now that will NX will probably have in comparison with Wii U:
-Better name, good marketing, affordable price, better new concept of playing (gimmick) if that hybrid thing is real, simple architecture of hardware, good launch titles, no software drouth...but yes, NX will perform same like Wii U!? Ok then. :)
