This is more of a gamer message board insulated line of thinking more than it is reality. The reality is of the four major console manufacturers, 3 of them (Nintendo, Sega, and Microsoft) have had their best selling game system's ever after previous product cycles of less than 5 years. The DS (released 3 1/2 years after GBA), Genesis (released 3 years after Sega Master System), and XBox 360 (released 4 years after the first XBox) all did monstrous business.

Releasing a better product isn't abandoning your marketbase, it's giving them something better to play. Yes there will be some who bitch and moan at inception, but don't kid yourself, there were people bemoaning the DS and XBox 360 too. Bet they all ended up buying a DS or XBox 360 eventually anyway. Game fans tend to make a lot of noise but most of these people will come around when they see Mario Galaxy 3 or Monster Hunter 5 or Dragon Quest XI running on NX.

The Wii U and 3DS are still going to sell 85-90 million or so units this generation even at current estimates, 3DS should finish around 70 million and Wii U probably somewhere around 15-17 million.

Even if NX only sells 70-75 million (home and portable versions combined), that's easily no.2 in the marketplace, and probably no.1 in Japan. DQXI + likely Monster Hunter + Yokai Watch + Pokemon and the rest of Nintendo's IP is not going to be a push over at all over there.

And really the GameCube was also abandoned after basically 4 years and Nintendo too, calling November 2005-November 2006 a real year of product support is fairly dubious. Didn't obviously impact Wii at all. Also they've already said they will continue to support the Wii U and 3DS after NX launch.

Exactly this, if NX is a fusion type platform then the timing is right to go for such a thing with the portable market lacking competition and the Wii U's slow performance.
