It is only a projection based on current data. Although if you do the number crunch on the current quantity shipped to retail and the projected target shipments for the coming months, you end up with 44.4 million Wiis sold to retail total by the end of 2008. Since the standard quantity to find on shelves at the end of a year for a product experiencing a shortage is between 100,000 and 1 million, that puts the high-end projection on par as pretty accurate if no further increases in production are made and demand remains high through the holiday season.
