It has been argued that one of the main drivers for people to buy HDTVs over the past several years has been that flat panel displays have become affordable not people's desire to view HD content; one of the key points that has been used to demonstrate this is that most households that have HDTVs do not pay for HD cable, or own the necessary cable box to view HD content.

Until viewing HDTV becomes standard (probably several years away) Blu-Ray will probably be seen a lot like Laser Disc was by most people; basically, as a product that has no real meaning in their current life. As long as people continue to watch standard definition cable on their HDTV (which will look worse than watching it on a SDTV if you own a LCD or Plasma TV), DVD (and upconverted DVD) will look very good to these people.
