Seriously, why is King K. Rool NOT in Smash as his own character??

Lucina and Dark Pit were added literally last minute just as fanservice as the team had extra time. Lucas and Roy were mostly ported from their respective past games (with Roy having a bit of a different moveset to boot, but not that much), meaning less effort was put into them as opposed to an entirely new character.

Yeah exactly. All of the clones took a fraction of the work of a new character. Like stated before, they didn't make it in the game over anyone else. They put them in the game because it was easy to reskin an existing character and make very minor minor tweaks.

Dude you do realize that those are excuses that the devs put forth after the backlash that fans had to the weak rooster peppered with some clones??  Sakurai knew the rooster was incomplete and lackluster so the clones were the only things they could do to make it "seem" complete.  That is just straight laziness on their part, and you can't be serious to think that they didn't have to reach a quota they could comfortably advertise?   Instead of saying "Yeah we removed a few characters for no good reason, and added some clones to fill the rest"...
