I think at this point they're just trying to ride out this gen with as much profit as possible.
It's encouraging that they're putting so much stake into games like Splatoon and Xenoblade Chronicles X, while still investing in other risky projects like Codename STEAM, The Wonderful 101 and Tomodachi Life, and reviving franchises like Kid Icarus and Star Fox. It's just that they typically don't give the needed marketing push for these games (aside from Splatoon and TL, which nailed it).
Of course, they need to do stuff like this more, but given the situation they're in right at this moment, I can kind of understand. Hopefully they begin the 9th gen with a bang and try out risky things from the gate. I don't want to see any resources wasted on stuff like Wii Fit or Wii Sports (and looking at the sales for the games on Wii U, I don't think we will).
