I think you're right.
But I feel as if the numbers of releases are bloated by default due to the separated handheld/home console divisions. So, there are always 2 Mario Karts, 2+ Mario Parties, 2+ Zelda games, etc. If we just look at one system separate from the other, it paints a more favorable picture, which would be a good reason for them to go with a unified platform imo. They could use those resources to build new IPs or put more into games that don't typically get that much attention.
