A few days ago, after watching how detailed MGS V was shaping up to be and some introspection, I assumed this was the reason why they let him go. I mean, it's no secret that a game like MGS V was going to run with a tight budget. That and their new focus on cheap and profitable mobile games. All signs led to the spending of a lot of money to get the game right.

For now, I'll reserve myself of saying Kojima is this or that. He's way too eccentric, that's for sure. And yes, can't blame Konami for turning in profit. They are a company, after all. But we will see if with the game release the means justified the ends.
