I consider Retro and Monolith second party. Nintendo didn't create those studios... they bought them. Just like Naught Dog for Sony and Bungie with Microsoft. Those studios existed before they were purchased by these big companies.

 

Nintendo was actually one of the founders of Retro Studios in cooperation with ex-Iguana Entertainment people
