That's funny, I was just thinking the other day, that although the quality of anime outside of sex-driven and japanese comedy has dropped in my opinion since the 90's, the big standouts in my eyes of the last few years have been Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill!
They're pretty close, but I liked Kill la Kill a bit more. I found Ryuko a fairly refreshing protagonist. Multilayered. She wasn't a complete punk-ass like Itsuki Minami, or Souichiro Yagi, etc and she wasn't an impossibly pure, good natured soul with a frustratingly delicate sense of confidence like Ichigo Kurosaki, etc.
Plus I just liked its visual quirks and style (which again, is pretty close to Gurren Lagann's.
