It would compete with their PS+ rental service and they didn't want to lose subscriptions...

[...] I only care about the possible future this might start where all publishers have subscription services like this and lock actual game content behind it to get more people to subscribe, which I personally find to be a horrible scenario (and look at the other shit publishers have been doing in the last years to get money from people before you say that this wouldn't happen).
