Also, look at Zelda U. Because of the power of the Wii U, Zelda will be open-world. It came to the point where they could make a bigger game and not have to sacrifice or tone down other aspects due to limitations. It's crazy, considering Zelda had always been more linear in design compared to many other games.

Zelda 1 on NES is open world, much more than some modern games having a huge world but a very linear progression, the design aspects of Zelda being a more linear game started on the N64. 

Open-world refers to the world of a game, not the progression. And for the standard the industry had back then, Zelda 1 was indeed open world, but an open world NES game at that.
