Yeah, it makes sense to ignore the 18 million people in Japan owning a 3DS.

3DS games are a lot cheaper to develop as well. There's simply no way a PS4 mainline Dragon Quest game will make the same amount of money as a 3DS mainline Dragon Quest game.

Console games get more exposition than handheld ones  by default, number of unitis a game sold does not tell the whole story, you can increase the value of your company a lot more by releasing an awesome DQ 11 on a home console and selling half of what you would on the 3DS. It also would bring a lot of prestige back to Squenix wich would strengthen them on western markets and atract more investments, maybe facilitate some publishing deals with other studios. Lots of ppl dont even know a DQ IX (and X as well for an entirely different reason, the same one ppl neglect FF XIV, its an MMO) existed even tough its a massive sucess on the 3DS, press and general public opinion treat handhelds and home consoles very differently.

Companies don't make decisions based on that and if they do they're stupid and deserve to be bankrupt. Game developers should never be allowed to make big corporate decisions. Looking at you Miyamoto...

Ignoring a userbase of 18 million just because "it's a handheld" isn't a good explanation or decision. Fire Emblem: Awakening brought a lot of prestige back to the franchise and saved it from death.

Ye sure man, game companies are not interested in theyre value at all, CD Projekts Red decision to go multiplataform by the cost of reducing graphical quality that it would otherwise have on PC wasnt because itd increase theyre exposition 10 fold and result in there stock values to shoot trough the roof during the whole period of the Witchers 3 development and even more after the release at all. DQ IX was exclusive to 3DS it sold a lot Im sure Square is happy with the return it gave them, but they clearly consider internaly that it didnt have the effect they expected it to have so they want to go back to home consoles, and theyre doing so full blown now with other titles as well. Will it work ? Maybe, but thats the logic behid the decision Square made.

The logic behind the decision of Square is most likely truck loads of cash by Sony. Dragon Quest IX was on the DS, not the 3DS btw.

Your example of TW3 makes no sense. You're saying console has more prestige over handhelds because the graphics are better and games are bigger and now you say the opposite with TW3? You really can't see the huge contradiction in your logic? CD Projekts Red went multiplatform to increase their userbase. By making Dragon Quest a PS4 exclusive Square would be doing the TOTAL opposite of that.

Yo-kai Watch is all the hype in Japan and gets tons of media exposure there, this again contradicts your logic. Dragon Quest isn't popular in the West, so don't even bother bringing that up.
