Why spend $300 for a console with one controller when you could spend 50 cents/per game at an arcade. Arcades did it better and for cheaper in 1995. Arcades were a better option for young adults because they used less time, less money and required less commitment. In 1994 Businessweek reported that arcade revenue was 7 Billion USD, while home console revenue was 6 Billion USD.
It wasn't till later on when arcades were declining that young adults had to go to consoles for their racing/flying /fighting/shooting games fix. In America arcades were popular back then and only with their death or decline could the Playstation control that demographic. |
Yes but I would credit PS1 for KILLING arcades. I don't think PS1 is the result of arcades commiting mass suicide.
