I think the devs- Murray, anyway- mentioned that if the game is successful and there's enough interest, he'd be very much interested in continuing to work on it post-release, rather than just moving on to a new title. Given presumably the universe itself won't be easily changed- i.e. what's on the planets, etc- such post-release work might instead be the addition of new mechanics or things to do within the created universe, basically giving them a sandbox of their own to develop ideas or activities. This could include more multiplayer-friendly elements or capacity, but I should note, to caution others, the purpose at launch does NOT seem to be to funnel players into a situation where player interaction is easy, if it's even going to be possible. The specific limitations are kind of only hinted at though, as some suggestions have been that direct player interaction simply won't be available, others that you CAN see players flying around and interact with them, but there's absolutely no mechanic to inform you that it is, in fact, another player as opposed to an NPC, meaning odds are if you see another player fly out of a station you're approaching, you'd never know who it is. Yet others suggest you can see it's another player, you just can't directly communicate, i.e. voice chat or whatever.

It's all in the air, really. =P Kind of getting the impression they're mostly focused on getting the actual universe, and its basic professions and activities, down before trying to add more to it. Hopefully the IGN First segments will be more specific at some point.
