I loved sg1 and Atlantis, though I found universe to be mostly disappointing, attempting to mimic battle star galactica but losing most of its humor and charm in the process. I was admittedly curious about where the story was going, but I wasn't surprised it was cancelled.
In retrospect I'd wager over 50% of sg1 episodes involved them getting captured and having to escape, so the writing wasn't exactly brilliant in that regard... But the characters were so funny and had such great chemistry that you just enjoyed the ride. Atlantis achieved this as well, and I suspect that's one of the reasons universe failed... The writing was frequently cheesy and those character interactions on the side were often about as interesting as a baked potato, but in the end most of the characters just weren't that likeable.
Anyway, I loved the world that franchise built, and really have zero interest in a "reimagining" trilogy.
