I was 16, and grew up with an NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and Sega CD. But by the time PS1 came out, I had moved on. All my friends moved on as well. Back then, gaming was what you did when you were a kid and when you grew up, you grew OUT of gaming entirely.
I can remember playing football with friends and there was some 18-19 year old guys playing with us. It was winter 1995. One of them asked us if we were going to get this new console called a Playstation. We all looked at eachother like, GAME SYSTEM?!!? It shocked us that someone their age would ask something like that and still play games. Never the less, we looked into it and all got Playstations.
That's the thing that I credit Sony with the most.
