A couple of years ago, I ended up formulating that one of the ways that Nintendo could save their handheld business, when things were going rough for the 3DS at first, with the rise of phones and tablets, is to create a SoC with a DRM specific to their software, that phone/tablet makers could buy and incorporate into their devices. The games would run primarily on this SoC, and phone/tablet makers would be able to advertise this feature and gain an extra $20 to $40 per device.
Nintendo could then release iterations of the SoC every three years helping to keep things current- and for new phones that met the specs of the SoC, during it's 2nd or last year, they could simply license the drm and emulate the games.
