It's true that 3rd parties aren't necessary for Nintendo's success, but they don't hurt. The failure of the Wii U is not due to trying to cater to 3rd parties. The design of the WiiU was flawed from the get-go.

It is a low-performance machine that is priced like a high-performance machine due to an artificial price hike caused by the screen on the controller. It also suffered greatly from software droughts.

So to say it failed because Nintendo tried to cater to 3rd parties is exceedingly simplistic.

If I went through all of the problems with the Wii U it would end up being a long post. I just picked the one most pertaining to this thread.
