It would only be 8th if you count Wii as 6th.

You either count gens by performance, where GC and Wii are 6th, Wii U 7th, NX 8th, or by chronological release, so Wii 7th, Wii U 8th, NX 9th.

You never count gens by performance unless you don't understand where the term "generation" originates.

There is however one way in which the NX might legitimately be considered 8th gen. If the next Nintendo console (after NX) has a launch close in time to the next Playstation/Xbox/whatever then we would be right to consider NX 8th gen. The console after NX would certainly be 9th gen and not 10th gen so you can see how that works. This is probably also true even if there is no Nintendo successor but NX releases closer to Wii U than PS5/Nexbox/whatever. There is no exact science to it but for most consoles it has been pretty obvious what generation they belong to (including Wii which is obviously a 7th gen console and Wii U which is obviously an 8th gen one)
