According to whom? Gens are defined by order of which a new platform is released and nothing else, it's 9th gen because it succeeds an 8th gen console.

Then is Xbox One only 3rd gen? Is PS4 only the 4th gen? we call these consoles... 8th gen consoles.

Because what gen a console belongs to is determined by its time frame, and competitors.

 

Nintendos NX console will compete against the 8th gen consoles, for probably 80% of its life... that makes it a 8th gen console.


What are you talking about Xbox 1 succeeds a 7th gen console, are you just looking for an argument? Gens start when a new hardware comes outs, NES was a 3rd gen console despite being Nintendo's first, SNES would then be a 4th gen suceeding it.

Mega Drive for a long time competed against the NES but it still was a 4th gen console because it succeeded the Master System a 3rd gen console. Under the logic you're using DC is a 5th gen console because it competed against the N64 and PS1 for a while.
