Wii U will gain cult status in time too. The system was basically destined for it.
Also at this stage of the game the GameCube did not have Baten Kaitos, RE4, Metroid Prime 2, or several other games, so if it's a little unfair to add in games when you're not factoring in what the Wii U could add to its library.
I personally was really dissapointed with the GameCube. I felt like Nintendo allowed Microsoft to basically take the FPS market away completely unchallenged, totally f*cked up the Mario 64 and Zelda: OoT/MM sequels but adding changes that no one asked for, and became very far removed from classic Nintendo. The system wasn't even going to have a d-pad in the original design, Miyamoto only relented at the last minute and they basically used the same tiny d-pad from the GBA (awful).
GameCube is something I'll always look at as having a lot of potential, but it all got blown.
