It's an industry standard to copy every successful idea, period. That's why Nintendo uses dual analog sticks, DLC, and internet multi-player. Don't try to imply it's not a two-way street.
On topic, I'm not sure what to say. People bought Splatoon knowing that they were totally putting control of their already paid for content into Nintendo's hands. One of the things I said about this early on was that Nintendo was manipulating the roll-out in an effort to keep it going long-term so that they could continue making money from it and keep Nintendo fans happy during the lean periods. It's pretty clear they want to extend the life of this game and they're going to do what they need to do to that end.
Still, yes, they should have disclosed this aspect of their plan from the start.
