There is one side of me that says: Nintendo tends to have a proper reveal for their consoles a year and a half before their release. (Wii/Revolution shown off in E3 2005, released holiday 2006. Wii U shown off E3 2011, released holiday 2012.) So going from their E3 track record, I'd say we'd get tech demos and an idea of what the console is at next E3 and at E3 2017 we will get to see the games, price and release date. Which will give the Wii U a 5 yr generation length. But another side of me says: Iwata seems to be hinting that he wants to release the console as soon as he announces it. He doesn't want competition to steal their ideas in the interim, and he says they will keep making Wii U and 3DS titles after the NX's release. So he could be announcing it for a release in 2016 giving the Wii U a shorter 4 yr lifespan. But still, that's a year and a half away, and with Starfox, Zelda, Fatal Frame, Devil's Third, further Smash DLC and more hidden titles for next year, I'll be fairly happy with the content released for the console. I just wish that a majority of my back catalogue weren't side scrolling platformers though... |
3ds was revealed less than a year before release. I don't particularly think they will announce nx in 2016 to release it on the same year, just noting that previous announcements mean nothing. after all, there's a different historical context whenever a new console is revealed.
